Although this is a blog focus on groom’s father speech, I decided to write a short article about how to structure and prepare the speech for the groom’s mothers also. Since most of the ideas are the same, especially the ones about structure and presentation, I consider this article to integrate very well in this blog.
In general, mothers are not expected to deliver an oration at their sons’ weddings. But if, according to the wedding protocol in your area (or if your son asks you), you have to offer one of the speeches that form the toast part of the reception that is organized after your son’s wedding, you should know some powerful tips on how to prepare and deliver an exceptional mother of the groom speech, tips that will be presented in the subsequent paragraphs.
The first thing you should do is to organize all the work that you will have to do in order to be able to deliver your oration just like the most successful public speakers. During the first step of the organization process, you have to find out what are the tasks that you will have to prioritize and then organize into a plan, which will also contain the estimated periods for their completion, as well as their deadlines. The fundamental activities that must be accomplished, related to your mother of the groom toast, are these: informing yourself about this kind of speech (by reading examples and resources that you can find on the Internet and even on this website), choosing the things that you would like to include in your oration, creating the text of the toast, practicing the speech that you composed and, lastly, delivering this speech at the wedding reception.
In the other articles that I published on this website, you can find valuable tips about the way in which you should prepare, compose and deliver your oration. In this article I would like to tell you other tips related to the content of your mother of the groom wedding speech. It’s recommended to choose a main topic for your toast and then to make sure that all the ideas that you include iin your speech are related to this principal topic.
After reading examples and articles about the type of oration that you need, you are ready to compose your toast. The first thing you ought to do when you begin to create the content of your toast is to choose the ideas about which you would like to tell during your oration. Don’t forget to select only the ideas that are consistent with the chosen main topic. After selecting the ideas that you intend to cover in your mother of the groom speech, you should establish the order in which you would like to include them. Formulate each chosen idea and write the text that you obtain on a piece of paper.
Now it’s time to check whether the speech you obtained respects the recommended duration or not. I told you about this recommendation in one of the articles that I published on this website. If you didn’t read them or you don’t have time to read them now (or maybe you read them, but you don’t remember), I must tell you that a wedding speech shouldn’t last for more than five minutes (although, according to some experts, a span of up to seven minutes for a mother of groom toast is acceptable).
Read the piece of paper on which you wrote the text of your oration, with the speed and intonation that you would use while delivering your speech. While doing this, it’s useful to imagine that you are at your son’s wedding reception and all the participants are looking at you and listening to your toast. If the duration of this reading exceeds five minutes, you must adjust the text in order to fit the recommended duration. You can do that in only two ways: you either reformulate some ideas (in fewer words) or eliminate some sentences or even ideas from the content of your mother of the groom speech. Then, you should read again the text and see if it fits the recommended span. Be careful not to deliver this oration in the way the pupils tell their lessons at school; use the presentation tips that I described in the corresponding article on this website.
