In this article I’ll tell you a little about the wedding speech order. You probably wonder why you should bother with this, but this is actually quite important. And you know why? For instance, the father of bride toast is the one that opens the wedding ceremony and because of this, it is considered the most important one, and also the most difficult toast to have. Some say that the bride’s father sets the tone of the whole ceremony.
This shouldn’t scare you, it’s not such a big deal, but since you’re the first one to start the wedding toasts, you must do it right. So, here’s the traditional order of the speeches.
Wedding speeches order
As I said, you’re the one giving the first speech. Here’s a little template. First, make sure you start by giving thanks to everyone that came to the wedding. Then, you should say a few nice words about your daughter and compliment her. Since it’s the most important day of her life, she’ll remember if for ever, so make sure you say nice things about her that make her feel good. Next, you can share with the audience a few moments from the bride’s childhood, maybe a few funny stories, but make sure they don’t embarrass her. Then you say a few nice things also about the groom and you welcome him and his parents into your family. Also, thank to the groom’s parents for the help with the wedding setup. And in the end thank to the bridesmaids, wedding planner and all the others that helped to setup the wedding.
The father of the groom speech is the next wedding toast. Since you welcomed him into your family before, now he’ll start by thanking you for the nice wishes, for the opening toast and for everything you did to prepare the wedding (usually the father of the bride is more involved in the wedding, so he deserves the glory for the successful event setup). Then, the groom’s father will also thank to the guests that came to the wedding and then say a few things about the newlyweds. Usually, he will say more about this son, also sharing a few memories from his childhood and some funny stories. Then he wishes a happy marriage to the couple.
The next speech is held by the groom. Although him and the bride are the central piece of the wedding, there’s not too much pressure on him, because the bride’s father did the hardest part by opening the toasts. The groom will first thank to the parents of the bride for their daughter and for the trouble they went through for setting the wedding. Next he will say a few things about the bride and maybe a funny joke about their honeymoon and in the end, he will thank to the bridesmaids and the groomsmen for the help with the wedding preparations.
The last speech is usually held by the best man. As everyone expects, this is supposed to be a funny speech. First, the best man should thank the groom because he chose him to be his best man and then he will spice things up with some funny jokes about the groom, but also he must be careful not to go too far with the jokes. A few funny things to make the people laugh it’s enough. Then, he will wish to the newlyweds a happy marriage and a great honeymoon and, of course, close with a joke.
This is the traditional order of wedding speeches and since you’re the one to give the first toast, you need to think it through a bit, making sure you don’t start with the wrong foot.
